In a world where mass production and profit often overshadow ethics and sustainability, we decided to do things differently! Our journey is rooted in fairness, reciprocity, and regenerative agriculture. This is the story of IKAT Cacao, spanning from the lush jungles of Flores, Indonesia, to the cups of conscious consumers worldwide.

The Beginnings: A Vision for Change
Our Founder’s Inspiration
IKAT Cacao was born from the vision of our founder, Septhania Tiwu, who grew up in a cacao-growing family on the beautiful island of Flores. Witnessing firsthand the challenges small farmers face, Septhania dreamed of a future where these farmers could thrive and participate in the global cacao market on equal terms. Her passion for sustainable farming and community development laid the foundation for what IKAT Cacao would become.
The Challenge of Unethical Practices
The global cacao industry has long been plagued by exploitation, deforestation, and unfair wages. Traditional cacao farming often involves practices that harm the environment and exploit workers. We knew there had to be a better way — a way that honored both the land and the people!
Ethical Sourcing and Sustainable Practices
Sustainable & Regenerative Cacao Farming
At IKAT Cacao, we are committed to sustainable cacao farming. Our farmers in Flores practice regenerative agriculture, which preserves the natural ecosystem.
Regenerative agriculture for cacao involves practices such as intercropping, agroforestry, and organic farming. By integrating cacao trees with other plants like vanilla, cloves, and fruit trees, we maintain a diverse ecosystem that supports wildlife and enhances soil fertility. This method mimics the natural growth patterns of the jungle, allowing cacao to thrive in harmony with its surroundings.

Fairness and Reciprocity
Direct Trade Cacao Practices
By engaging in direct trade, we cut out the middlemen, allowing us to pay above-market prices. This supports the farmers and their families and allows the larger communities to thrive and flourish.
Ethical Cacao Sourcing
Ethical sourcing is another cornerstone of our business. We believe in fair trade cacao practices that ensure our farmers are paid fairly for their hard work. Our commitment to ethical cacao sourcing means that we prioritize the well-being of our farmers and their communities. We work closely with small family farms, providing them with the resources and support they need to succeed. This can be hardware such as rakes or microloans that can be applied for. By paying fair wages and investing in community development, we help to build a more equitable and sustainable cacao industry.
The Impact of Fair Trade
Fair trade practices have a profound impact on the lives of our farmers. By ensuring they receive a fair price for their cacao, we enable them to invest in their farms, educate their children, and improve their quality of life. This reciprocal relationship benefits everyone involved, from the farmers to the end consumers who enjoy high-quality, ethically produced cacao.
Community Development
At IKAT Cacao, we believe in giving back to the communities that make our success possible. By returning 5% of our B2B revenues back to the local communities, we support initiatives in education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. By supporting these essential services, we help to create thriving and sustainable communities.

Environmental Stewardship
Our commitment to the environment extends beyond our farming practices. We actively work to reduce our carbon footprint and promote conservation efforts for instance by giving out organic plant protection for free. By protecting the natural habitats of Flores and promoting biodiversity, we contribute to the preservation of this beautiful island for future generations.
Crafting Fine Cacao
The Art of Fine Cacao Trinitario
At IKAT Cacao, we specialize in producing Fine cacao of the type Trinitario. The Trinitario variety is known for its unique and complex flavor profile, making it a favorite among chocolate makers and cacao lovers. Next to Criollo, it counts as fine cacao and is very rare with a world production share of less than 10%. Our superior processing methods, combined with the exceptional quality of our cacao beans, result in a product that stands out in the market.
